Post: You Been Picking The Biggest Commission. You Should Have Been Picking The One That Come Back.

A woman reviewing market charts at a home office desk

Two offers on the table. One pay you a hundred and fifty dollars today, one time. The other pay you twelve dollars a month for as long as that person stay subscribed.

Almost everybody reach for the hundred and fifty. I reached for it for years.

Run the arithmetic one time though. Twelve dollars a month catch a hundred and fifty in month thirteen. Then it keep going. Three years in, that twelve dollar offer handed you four hundred and thirty two dollars. The hundred and fifty is still a hundred and fifty. It got paid, it got spent, and it ain’t said a word to you since.

Same recommendation. Same one person. Same breath out your mouth. Different structure underneath it.

Here’s What You Walk Away With Today

Four things, and none of them cost you a dollar.

One, why the biggest number on the table is usually the smallest number in the deal. Two, the three questions that tell you whether a payout is worth your name on it. Three, where the renewable money already sitting in your life, whatever you do for a living. Four, the catch, because there is one and I ain’t gonna skip it.

This ain’t a program pitch. It’s a way of reading an offer before you put your reputation on top of it.

A Shift Versus A Position

A one time commission is a shift. You showed up, you did the work, you got paid, you went home. Tomorrow the clock start at zero again.

A renewal is a position. You did the work one time and the work kept its seat. You ain’t got to be in the room for it to pay.

That distinction run deeper than referral money. It’s the same thing I meant when I said your rate ain’t a feeling, it’s a position. Structure is the part nobody negotiate and everybody live under.

A one time commission is a shift. A renewal is a position.

Now here go the part that make grown people uncomfortable. The hundred and fifty ain’t wrong. It’s just a wage. If rent due Friday, take the hundred and fifty, and don’t let nobody online shame you for feeding your house.

But know what you picked. You picked a wage. And if every move you make is a wage, you ain’t built a business. You built yourself a second job with worse hours and no benefits.

Survival mode take the biggest number on the table. Builder mode ask how many times that number come back.

The Compounding Nobody Shows You

Here go why structure beat size over time. It ain’t patience. It’s arithmetic.

Say you bring in one person a month on that twelve dollar renewal and nobody leave. Month one you made twelve dollars. By month twelve you making a hundred and forty four dollars in that month alone, and across the whole year you collected nine hundred and thirty six dollars.

Now run the other lane. Twelve people at a hundred and fifty each is eighteen hundred dollars. That’s more money. That’s honestly more money, and anybody telling you different is selling you something.

So look at month thirteen. One lane start that month at a hundred and forty four dollars before you get out the bed. The other lane start at zero and need you to go find a stranger.

That’s the whole trade. Recurring lose the first year and win every year after, as long as the thing survive. Which bring us to the only questions that actually matter.

Three Questions Before You Put Your Name On It

First question. Does it renew, and do you get paid on the renewal?

Those two things ain’t the same, and that gap is where people get got. Plenty of programs sell a subscription and pay the person who referred it for the first month only. Some pay for twelve months and cut it off. Some pay as long as the customer stay. The product renew either way. Your money might not. Go read the payout terms before you build a single post around it, same way I said to read the fine print on anything you promote.

Second question. Would that person still want it in month six?

Recurring money is just a monthly vote on whether a thing is useful. If it don’t get opened, it get cancelled. You can talk somebody into month one. You cannot talk nobody into month seven.

You can’t out promote a thing nobody open. The renewal is the review.

Third question. Can you still answer a question about it a year from now?

Because you will get asked. Recurring money mean a long relationship with your own recommendation. If you can’t explain the thing in your own words twelve months from now, you ain’t recommending it, you repeating a sales page. Your credibility got a threshold, and every lazy recommendation spend a piece of it you don’t get back.

The One Number That Decide All This

Everything I just told you about compounding depend on one number, and most people never think to ask for it. How long does the average customer actually stay?

Run it backward and watch the whole argument flip on you. If people cancel after four months, that twelve dollar renewal pay you forty eight dollars total. The hundred and fifty beat it by a hundred and two dollars, and it beat it on day one.

So recurring ain’t automatically better. Recurring is better when the thing is good. That’s it. That’s the entire condition, and everybody selling you on passive income skip right over it.

Which mean the quality of what you promote ain’t a moral question no more. It’s a math question. A weak product don’t just cost you a reader. It cost you the one thing that made this structure worth picking in the first place.

So ask the company how long customers stay. Some of them will tell you straight. The ones that get slippery about it already gave you your answer.

Ask how long customers stay. The ones that dodge the question just answered it.

What I Learned From Not Being The One Who Pays

Every recurring charge in this business go through my wife Chiquita. She a co founder in this business, and she pay every bill we got. Not some of them. Every single one.

So I ain’t the one watching those charges land. She is. And that taught me something I could not have learned from the selling side of the table, because from the selling side a renewal just look like good news showing up on its own.

From where she sit, a renewal ain’t news. It’s a decision. Twelve dollars, nineteen dollars, forty nine dollars, every month, and the only thing keeping any of it on that card is whether somebody in this house actually opened the thing. What we use stay. What we meant to use get cut, and it get cut without a conversation, because there ain’t nothing to discuss. We ain’t using it.

That right there is the exact moment somebody commission died. And they never got a notification. They got silence and a smaller deposit, and they probably blamed the algorithm.

I came up in commercial HVAC. Journeyman licensed in more than one state. In that trade you learn quick that the install ain’t the job. The job is whether the thing still running when you come back in six months. Recurring money work the exact same way.

You don’t get paid for the sale. You get paid for the thing still running.

Where Your Renewable Money Already At

Now the practical part, and this work no matter what you do for a living.

Pull up your own statement. Not a program directory. Your statement.

Every monthly charge on there that you have willingly renewed for a year is a thing you can defend for a year. You already proved it. You voted with your own money, twelve times, and nobody was watching you do it.

That’s your starting inventory. Not the highest paying offer you can dig up. The ones you already kept.

Barber, it might be the booking software that killed your no shows. Driver, the dashcam service or the fuel card. Cook, the supplier account or the invoicing app. Electrician, the estimating software the whole shop run on. Teacher, the planning tool. Nurse, the scheduling app. Somebody running a household, the thing that keep the family from losing one important document.

Every one of those got a company behind it. Plenty of them pay for referrals. A good number pay recurring. And almost nobody you compete with ever checked, because they was busy hunting the biggest number instead of the most honest one.

Motion Versus Movement

Chasing one time payouts feel productive. New offer, new post, new push, new payout, start over Monday. That’s motion. Motion is busy.

Stacking renewals feel like nothing happening at all, right up until the month it does. That’s movement. Movement is going somewhere.

Same spine as what I said about owning your content instead of renting it. Different subject, same lesson. Build the thing that keep paying after you stop touching it.

The Catch, Because There’s Always One

I’m still working a full time job while I build this. Seven to three. So I ain’t about to sit here and tell you renewals mean you stop working.

Here go the honest catch. Recurring money is slower, and it ain’t really yours. A program can change its terms on a Tuesday. A company can get bought and kill the referral side. A product can get worse and your people leave, and they leave with your name in their mouth.

So recurring put a bigger obligation on you, not a smaller one. Somebody card get charged every month because of something you said one time. That ain’t passive. That’s ongoing. The word passive describe your labor. It don’t describe your responsibility.

Don’t promote nothing you would cancel. If it ain’t good enough to sit on your statement, it ain’t good enough for theirs.

How To Start This Week

Plain steps. Nothing to buy.

One, write down every subscription you personally renewed for twelve months or more. That list longer than you think.

Two, search each name with the word partner, affiliate, or referral behind it. Read what they pay. Then read how long they pay it.

Three, pick one. One, not six. The one you can answer questions about in your sleep.

Four, write the thing you wish somebody had told you before you subscribed. Not a review. The thing you figured out in month four.

Five, say what it cost you and say what it don’t do. The part you leave out is the part that cost you the trust later.

And if you ain’t never been paid for a recommendation at all, start further back than this. I laid that out in how you been recommending things for free your whole life. If you want to see what it look like when somebody build the offer on something they control instead of renting somebody else terms, that’s what I did with my own program.

Dig. Build. Grow.

Dig mean go through your own statement and find what survived you. Build mean put your real experience behind one of them, in your own words, fine print included. Grow mean do it again next month while the first one still paying.

You been going through this game taking the biggest number on the table. Try growing through it instead. Take the number that come back.

A hundred and fifty dollars one time is a good day. A hundred and forty four dollars a month is a different life, and it start with one honest sentence about something you already kept.

Your story ain’t over. You just been getting paid in shifts when you could have been taking a position.
